Dog Collars And Leashes Need To Fit Your Dog

Buying a collar or leash for your dog should not be done casually.

The breed of your dog, its size and what your training goals are all must be considered when choosing the proper dog collars and leashes. Training to change bad behavior of a large breed will certainly require a different dog collar than one used to obedience train a small sheltie.

Most large dog breeds have muscular necks which protect them fairly well from injury from prong collars and choke collars. But greyhounds are easily injured by such collars. And they should never be used on small and toy breeds. Our daughter trained her sheltie in a 4H program and did well but the 4H leader insisted in a choke collar that I know hurt the dog. Thankfully he learned fast and did not fight it.

If you have any doubt about the type of dog collar and leash you should buy, talk to a good trainer or your veterinarian for advice.

Choosing Your Dog's Collar

The best dog leashes are not much good without the proper type of collar for your dog. There is a large variety of dog collars to choose from. The main types are prong collars, electronic shock or scent collars, choke collars, front leading collars such as the Gentle Leader, harnesses and plain leather or fabric collars.

Some of the old standby collars, such as shock collars, are being replaced by newer, more humane methods of discouraging unwanted behavior in your pet. I realize a lot of authorities maintain that shock collars really don't hurt, but I wonder how many of them have used one on their own neck. The vapor, scent, and forward leading leashes are proving they can do the job more humanely.

Dog Training Collars

There no doubts that dog training collars are a great aid when it comes to training your dog, and that is why there are such a variety of them available with each employing different mechanisms that aid in guiding your dog, restraining him and also discouraging him from bad as well as disobedient behavior.

However, it is very necessary to use the dog training collars in an appropriate manner if you don't wish to harm your dog and so, you need to ensure that the collar is of the right size as well.

Dog Collars And Leashes Protect Your Best Friend

Specialized dog collars and leads are needed when training dogs to seek something and then return to you. Commanding them to "stay" as you walk away and then come to you requires leads of up to 50' in length. Especially short leads are need for training with dog harnesses for service dogs.
